What we strive for

Our Mission

Welcome to grass roots initiative dedicated to enhancing the New Wave Pier Dog Run at the East River Esplanade, the only dog park serving the vibrant neighborhoods of Murray Hill, Kips Bay, Tudor City, Turtle Bay, and Midtown. With a bustling population of over 54,000 in residents in the 10016 Zip Code and an equally lively canine community, we’re committed to advocating for the improvements and amenities our beloved park deserves. Our mission is to ensure that both dogs and their owners can enjoy a safe, clean, and enjoyable space to play and socialize.

Who we serve

“Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.” — Agnes Sligh Turnbul

At the heart of our community is a deep love for our dogs. Through every joy and challenge, our loyal companions are there with soulful eyes, a comforting paw, and a cheerful, slobbery kiss to remind us that everything will be alright. We believe that in return for their unwavering support and affection, we owe it to them to ensure their play area is as fun, secure, safe, and healthy as possible. Our mission is to advocate for the New Wave Pier Dog Run, making it a space where every dog can thrive and enjoy their time to the fullest. Join us in our commitment to giving back to our furry friends and creating the best environment for them to play and socialize.

What we would like from NYC

Story of the dog run

In October 2022, NYC Council Member Keith Powers announced that a new dog run would be located on the East River Esplanade between 38th and 39th Streets. While a fenced space for for dogs to socialize unleashed was needed it is bare of needs which would make it safer and more PAWsome.

Our goals

Story of the dog run

Story of the dog run

Currently New Wave Pier Dog Run, the only dog park for tens of thousands of area residents is bare bones. It is hard black top, which bakes in the summer sun all day, has extremely minimal shade and no access to fresh water.

Our goals are simple. By the time the heat sets in for summer 2025 have improvements made to the dog run to make the experience for our furry friends safer and healthier.

When is blacktop asphalt dangerous for your dog?

At an air temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit in the sun, blacktop asphalt, such as that found at the East River Esplanade Dog Run, can reach 125 degrees. At these temperatures, your dog's paws can suffer burns within 60 seconds. New York City reaches an average high temperature of 77 degrees or above during the first week of June and does not fall below 77 degrees until the second week of September. This means that for about 13 weeks, from June to September, the blacktop asphalt at the New Wave Pier Dog Run is too hot for your dog to play on comfortably and safely for any period of time. Additionally, blacktop asphalt absorbs heat from the sun due to its materials and color and then radiates this heat back into the air above the surface. Without shade or a source of water available, this radiation effect can lead to dogs becoming dangerously overheated and potentially unable to walk home.
